How an Air Conditioner works

In an air conditioner, the air gets sucked in through a grill where the air is blown over pipes containing refrigerant. The refrigerant takes away the heat content from the air and the air is blown back into the room. Meanwhile, the heated gaseous coolant moves to the condenser where it is changed back into cool liquid. The cycle repeats.

Common Issues and their Solutions

Now let’s review some common issues that you can solve on your own, without calling an expert.

  1. If the AC is not working at all.

In such a case, firstly, check for the main supply to ensure the AC is getting power. If yes, then try resetting the switches and thermostat settings. If you still don’t get any fruitful results then check for the capacitors, fuses and contactors. The method to check the contactors and the capacitors will be explained in a while.

  1. If the AC is not cooling the air.

Air Conditioning Repair Tips

If you’re not getting cool air when the AC is working then check for filters. Wash and clean them for any stuck particles. Also check for any ice formed on the coils. Blow air from the fan to melt it and check for results. If you notice ice on the coils frequently, call an expert.

 

  1. Checking for the capacitor and Contactor.

To check for capacitor and contactor, turn on the system and listen for a clicking sound followed by a humming or buzzing sound. If you’re successful in hearing the humming/buzzing sound, then the contractor is fine and the capacitor needs to be replaced else vice-versa.
